Crowns are usually needed because a large cavity or fracture in the tooth that has weakened the tooth to the point that, if left untreated or if treated with a filling, the tooth will continue to break. The crown is able to support and strengthen the tooth from the outside and restore aesthetics and function. Crowns allow Dr. Stoker to save a tooth that otherwise would need to be pulled.
A crown covers the portion of the tooth above the gum line, essentially becoming the tooth’s new outer surface. The inside of the tooth and roots are left intact. Crowns are most often made of porcelain, or metal, but we also offer the latest crown materials, from emax to zirconia. The latest addition to our options of materials is a new, more translucent zirconia that can be used on anterior teeth. This material is much stronger than porcelain and requires less tooth to be removed.
Getting a crown at our Henderson, NV dental office requires two appointments. During your first visit, we will digitally scan your teeth and send the files to our lab which will then design and fabricate the crown to your unique specifications. We will also place a temporary crown that will protect the tooth while the permanent crown is made. You’ll return to our office, where the doctor will ensure the proper fit and aesthetics of the crown before permanently adhering it.
